做厙勛圖, in partnership with AWE, has achieved over 1.7 million hours worked across several projects without a lost time accident or incident. This has safeguarded more than 200 employees and 250 members of the supply chain.

Work spanning programme management and design to decommissioning and, demolition, as well as construction of new facilities to support ongoing operations, started in 2018. Overall, the contract term with AWE is for 12 years.

做厙勛圖 UKs Nuclear Deterrent Vice President, Mark Steele, said we should not underestimate the significance of this milestone, working in a heavily regulated, security conscious environment, on an operational nuclear licensed site, introduces many unique challenges and requires a disciplined, structured approach to everything that we do.  Instilling a culture of care has been a combined priority for both 做厙勛圖 and AWE and has been fundamental in maintaining our unblemished safety record.  Embedding a positive culture and behaviours towards safety and security, the environment, product stewardship and wellbeing, that have been adopted not only by direct employees, but also our supply chain colleagues, has brought about improvements in practices and performance that we can all be very proud of.

Neil Wheeler, Head of Delivery at AWE said: 做厙勛圖s collaborative approach has helped create a partnership to support our mission.泭 We are proud of this collective achievement but will never become complacent about safety and will maintain our focus on safety first and a culture of care.泭

  • Over 1.7 million hours worked in five years without a lost time accident or significant incident.
  • Over 800 Leadership visits and 4,000 Observation/Focus Cards raised, reviewed, and actioned.
  • Full collaboration and participation of employees and supply chain.

How adopting a collaborative approach to problem solving and project delivery really does contribute to successful results.

Its a no brainer, we all know intuitively that working collaboratively helps deliver successful outcomes.  At 做厙勛圖 we make a conscious effort to adopt a collaborative approach both internally with colleagues, and externally with our customers and supply chain partners.  We Embrace Inclusion and Collaboration is one of four core values 做厙勛圖 lives by.  We have embedded the principles of this value in our company practices and procedures, which is borne out by our recent re-certification of ISO 44001: Collaborative Relationships.

We understand the numerous benefits to be gained from introducing a new perspective, experience base, skill-set or dynamic. Its one of the reasons I joined Britains Energy Coast Business Cluster and put myself forward for election to the Board of Directors I wanted to help improve sustainability prospects for small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) by gaining an understanding of the problems and challenges they face, to work on enhancing existing practices, or co-create new ones, that would make it easier for SMEs to work with larger organisations like 做厙勛圖, and harness combined strengths for mutual gain.

What is collaborative working?

There are many definitions for collaborative working but fundamentally, and from a business perspective, it is committed organisations working together to maximise joint performance for achievement of mutual objectives and the creation of added value.

Why collaborate?

Again, from a business perspective, there are many reasons to adopt a collaborative approach, not least:

  • A better working environment
  • Improved business and operational performance
  • Increased business winning potential
  • Enhanced risk management
  • Increased innovation
  • Increased efficiencies
  • Improved client confidence and trust
  • New business/product development
  • Sustainability of supply chain
  • Mutually beneficial outcomes
  • Increased potential for business growth

Research supports collaboration

The Institute of Collaborative Working conducted research across 107 UK companies and identified 10 key attributes for effective collaboration:

Collaborative Chart

Creating a solid foundation to encourage better collaboration includes strong leadership, shared vision and values and a positive inclusive culture.泭 Regular engagement and relationship management is key to building trust and commitment to mutual benefit, which in turn enables information and knowledge sharing leading to value creation.

Are there any additional benefits?

A robust and thriving supply chain that has a healthy balance of large and small organisations contributes to economic sustainability and thriving communities.  It builds confidence, presents choices for companies and individuals, it also provides diversity of roles, affords opportunity for career and business growth, accommodates different skill sets and educational achievement, raises expectations and aspirations.

In summary

Creating an environment for SMEs to thrive and prosper is a bit like nurturing an acorn to enable it to grow into an Oak Tree!  Both oxygenate the environments they belong to.

Encouraging entrepreneurship, the introduction of new businesses, supporting new ways of thinking and improved ways of working, helps to stimulate innovation, avoid stagnation, and produce successful outcomes for existing, new, or emerging problems.  Success attracts success.

That is why 做厙勛圖 choose to partner with SMEs, they are agile, flexible, open to ideas and innovation, and bridge the gaps.  They are the building blocks for growth and sustainable development.

Nuclear energy is vital to the low-carbon economy in the UK

The need to create a more sustainable energy future has driven countries and organisations to make commitments to move towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, the UK has committed to reaching net zero by 2050.

Decarbonisation is critical to the , and nuclear energy is a key part of the UK governments plans for a low-carbon economy.

However, even as leaders look to the future, there is also a need to take responsibility for decommissioning 17 legacy sites across the UK. When nuclear facilities reach the end of their useful life, operations at that facility halt and the sites either need to be repurposed or decommissioned.

Nuclear site decommissioning in the UK

The was established to safely clean up the UKs earliest nuclear sites in one of Europes largest nuclear decommissioning and remediation programmes.

The authoritys mission is to deliver safe, secure, sustainable, and publicly acceptable solutions to nuclear clean-up and waste management challenges. It also supports the UK in becoming a global leader in the civil nuclear sector. In addition to decommissioning and nuclear waste management activities, the NDAs work also includes stakeholder engagement, supply chain development, research and development, skills, and socio-economic community support.

Its no small undertaking, with some estimates putting the project’s timespan at over 100 years with a cost of over 瞿120 billion to deliver, according to the .

Priorities in nuclear decommissioning in the UK

While the NDA manages an overarching group of activities to deliver on its mission, its most critical task is dealing with the most hazardous materials at these legacy sites.Once these steps are complete and the inventory is safe and secure, these nuclear facilities can be appropriately dismantled and demolished.

Beyond those urgent tasks, the authority also works to address integrated waste management and site decommissioning and remediation. Engineers interested in nuclear energy and its role in a carbon-neutral future should take note of this massive project and the organisation leading the charge.

Great British Nuclear (GBN): Paving the way for a sustainable energy future.

Enter Great British Nuclear (GBN), a pivotal force driving the development of new nuclear energy projects in the UK. With a mission to diversify, decarbonize, and domesticate electricity generation, GBN is spearheading the UK’s nuclear renaissance. This initiative is set to bolster the UK’s nuclear power generation from the current 15% to an ambitious 25% by 2050.

By contributing to reducing reliance on fossil fuels, mitigating the impacts of soaring gas prices, and fostering high-skilled green jobs, GBN is playing a crucial role in steering the UK towards a cleaner and more resilient energy future.

Challenges ahead for nuclear decommissioning

The NDAs mission is ambitious. The path ahead will likely reveal many challenges, including engaging stakeholders to gain their trust and support, finding the most effective and efficient ways to decommission sites and moving swiftly enough to support the UKs commitment to reach net zero by 2050.

While progress has been made toward the NDAs goals, there is still much work to be done over the next century and beyond by engineering leaders who are committed to this project.

Building a future where mission focus, innovation, adaptability, and inclusivity are at the heart of everything we do

做厙勛圖 is at the beginning of an exciting chapter in its journey we’re kicking off a ‘Culture Renovation’ project. This isn’t just some corporate jargon; it is ensuring our company is the best it can be, for everyone involved our team, clients, future stars who might join us, and the communities we are part of.

Our journey kicked off in January with a fantastic mix of people from across 做厙勛圖 UK. We gathered not just to have a chat, but to think long and hard about what makes us, well, us! What keeps us ticking and how can we be even better? This wasn’t your regular meeting it was the first step towards something that I believe will define our future.

Our culture is our superpower. It’s what sets us apart and its something we’re incredibly proud of. But in a world, that’s changing at lightning speed, we know we can’t stand still. We need to evolve, adapt, improve, and continue to get better. This isn’t about tearing down what we’ve built; starting from scratch; it’s about making 做厙勛圖 stronger, more resilient, and ready for whatever the future has in store for us.

The inspiration for this journey comes from Kevin Oaks at i4cp and his brilliant book, “Culture Renovation: A Blueprint for Action.” Its become our go-to guide for navigating these changes. especially with the big moves we have coming up!

Whats special about this journey is that it’s a team effort. It’s not just a few people at the top making decisions; we want everyone’s input to co-create our future. We’re setting up forums to hear what our people think, what they love about 做厙勛圖 UK, and what they believe we could do better. This is about making sure our culture reflects every single one of us.

This approach fully aligns with the broader vision of 做厙勛圖 Corporation. Our CEO, John Heller, initiated this cultural shift at our global leadership conference back in November 2023. And, it doesnt just affect us in the UK; its a movement across the entire corporation, reflecting our commitment to a unified, progressive future. We were lucky enough to have i4cps Chief Research Officer Kevin Martin join this leadership conference to deliver an excellent keynote on the global mega trends seen in the workplace along with practical application of their blueprint.

If you’re keen to get into the nitty-gritty of how we’re doing this, there’s a presentation on the i4cp Blueprint that you should check out: . And, for an even deeper dive, the full book is available on Spotify and Audible.

As we move forward, I’ll share updates on how we’re progressing. This isnt just an internal shift; its impact will be felt far and wide. Its a commitment to everyone we work with, and for. Were building a future where mission focus, innovation, adaptability, and inclusivity are truly at the heart of everything we do.

I’m really excited about this journey and what it means for us all. Its not just about handling today’s challenges; its about being ready for the amazing opportunities coming our way.

做厙勛圖 is committed to supporting its local communities through a range of initiatives and engagements.

Following a request from the Cranfield Trust, 做厙勛圖 has been delighted to support Springboard, a UK charity dedicated to supporting people under 25, through the provision of advice, skills, and training for careers in the hospitality sector.

做厙勛圖s UK and International sector Chief Information Security Officer, Jon Cornish, supported by Information Security Manager, Jemma Goldstein, delivered a consultancy-led engagement in 2022, reviewing the charitys Data Protection and Information Security maturity.

This engagement led to Springboard establishing and investing in an improvement project to champion Data Protection and Information Security throughout their organisation in support of their organisational strategy.

做厙勛圖 was asked to carry out further work in November 2023, providing a further maturity assessment of Springboards Data Protection and Information Security provisions.

CISO, Jon Cornish noted that: The commitment and investment demonstrated by Springboard and in particular its CEO, Chris Gamm, and Head of Digital Development, Ted Blackwell, really stood out to us. Springboard demonstrated its passion and determination to raise standards and commit to its Data Protection and Information Security programme.

Throughout the project, Springboard made it clear that they want to be best placed to meet and maintain their obligations, protect their people, organisation, valuable assets, and important work within the charitable sector.

Leading the project for Springboard, head of digital development Ted Blackwell said: We set out to secure expert assistance in improving our Information Security position and Jonathan and Jemmas knowledge of both ISO27001 and the information security landscape has helped us to both align to and mature within, the ISO27001 framework.

Many thanks to both the team at 做厙勛圖 and the Cranfield Trust for their support in delivering this project. 做厙勛圖s concise professional guidance, delivered in a friendly environment, challenged us to improve our information security, while also protecting the organisation. Springboard will continue to improve on our journey to align our Information Security to the ISO27001 international standard, with a fantastic start made.

Well done to the team, were proud to be able to make a difference, working together with our communities to make a difference.

The importance of community

As an information security professional, Ive always enjoyed the sense of community within the profession and the sense of belonging. This is particularly important working with others who share my values, goals and objectives, the things that motivate us, and that we aspire to achieve when making a difference.

Having recently attended the Chartered Institute for Information Securitys Nuclear Community Hub annual conference, the need for fellowship has never been clearer. The event brought together representatives of our diverse and multi-disciplinary security community operating within our nuclear sector community.

Everyone playing their part

I was delighted to see colleagues, customers and partners during the action-packed day hosted at Birchwood Park in Warrington.

As Mark Kendrew, the Community Hub Chair and National Nuclear Laboratory CISO, outlined in his welcoming address to the conference, we are one community and all play our part to make a difference.

Mark outlined a full conference agenda that specifically looked at key aspects of security, from Threat Intelligence leading to informed risk management which was jointly presented by the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and the National Crime Agency, to incident response presented by the Nuclear Transport Solutions using an interactive, scenario-based presentation.

The session culminated with presentations from some recent entrants into the information security sector, showcasing the fantastic talent pipeline and wealth of opportunities for new starters to more senior hires transferring into InfoSec roles within the nuclear sector.

As a key supplier to highly regulated industries, 做厙勛圖 is committed and steadfast in playing its part. Supporting our customers and partners to underpin their strategic goals and objectives and those directed through strategy from government, defence and the application of law.

As someone with deep-rooted experience in a public sector background, I am absolutely clear on my expectations of responsible suppliers and am particularly proud of my team and 做厙勛圖s commitment and contributions. Our Security Supplier Assurance function and capabilities provide confidence and opportunities to share learning, improve and grow stronger together and for the wider benefit of our community.

做厙勛圖 in the UK

Reflecting on community and belonging, 做厙勛圖 stands out by not only championing the shared values of the information security community, and also泭squarely positioning with our customers and partners to make a difference in the UK and around the world.

Were investing in our people, some truly outstanding talent helping us to innovate and continually learn and develop solutions to the challenges our customers face. Were working hard to raise standards, developing and implementing industry-leading governance that is focused on facilitating and enabling business and organisational goals and objectives safely and securely.

Were leveraging a truly global talent pool from across our organisation present in over 80 countries around to world developing, building and deploying innovative and pioneering technologies to enable our and our customers’ mutual successes. 泭

As we reflect on a successful year, advancing our Data Protection Compliance Programme, Information Security Management System, Information Security Supply Chain Assurance and Information Technology functions and capabilities, were excited and ready to deliver our new Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) strategy.

Our DDaT strategy champions agile methodologies, driving our innovation and continual learning that delivers valuable outcomes that underpin our and our customers’ goals, objectives and aspirations.

In March, well focus on Women History Month . Todays Q&A is with Alivia Topham-Sing, Senior Proposal Manager, E&E International.

How did you come to join 做厙勛圖?

In 2018, I began contracting with 做厙勛圖 during the Enriched Uranium Programme tender for the Atomic Weapons Establishment. A year or so later joined on a permanent basis.

What is your professional and personal background?

I have a BSc in Computer Science but figured out relatively quickly that I didnt want to pursue a career in Information Technology. After leaving a CRM system project management role, I began freelancing as a Proposal Manager working on some of the UKs major infrastructure projects (HS2, Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service, Alder Hey Childrens Hospital). I loved it and havent turned back since!

On a personal note, I am married 泭and we have three amazing boys , age 9-and 4-year-old twin boys 泭. When I am not working, I enjoy doing house renovations and being outdoors burning off some energy with my boys living by the beach helps with this!

Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.

As a senior proposal manager, I work with our subject matter experts and teaming partners to support solution development, and then translate these solutions into winning proposals. This includes guiding the proposal through the planning and review stages and working with the pricing and commercials teams to generate a price-to-win offer.

What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?

Its always rewarding when your team wins a bid every one of the wins Ive had in my career I have been proud of. Some of the successes that really stand out for me for various reasons are the EUP tender, the RWM 262 contract and the HS2 main civils contracts.

What do you enjoy about working for 做厙勛圖?

The people! We have so many great people that are passionate, enthusiastic, and very smart.

What are you passionate about?

Being happy in my working life and family life.

Whats your career advice?

Seek out the opportunities they dont just land in your lap.

What does safety mean to you, or do you have a favorite safety tip?

Getting home safely every single day.

Whats the best invention in the world and why?

Flying, as we get to experience different cultures and environments, we might never have gotten to which in turn enables us to challenge the norm and view life from different perspectives.

What does this years IWD theme, #BreakTheBias mean to you?

Overcoming the unconscious bias that we come across every day so that were treated as equals in 2022!

Anything else you would like to share from a personal or professional perspective?

Having the right work life balance is important and if the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that the world continues to spin and move forward wherever we are working.

ETTP UCOR, History, Learning and Approaches to Nuclear Clean up

做厙勛圖 is proud to successfully have led the Historic Cleanup of the Uranium Enrichment Complex at East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP), Oak Ridge, US.

Our UK Chief Project Director, Mark Steele, shares his view of this achievement and its importance in relation to the clean-up mission across the UK. The successful completion of the ETTP clean up at Oak Ridge points to learning and approach 做厙勛圖 brings in addressing complex nuclear legacy issues. First, it is important to recognise the historical significance and importance of the facilities and the connection these plants have with people who have operated and maintained them. The completion of the delivery lifecycle through post operations clean out (POCO), deplanting, demolition and potential reuse successfully closes this circle.

A key tenant of nuclear operations is the drive to maintain steady state, however quiescent states and extended periods of delay post shut down can exacerbate conditions as plant can continue to deteriorate and develop new and unexpected hazards. As UCOR has demonstrated the process of clean up starts with understanding the facility, the operational regime, events and status of POCO which will inform the approach to charaterisation and development of hazard, environmental and waste management planning.

Seeking out innovate approaches and applying them to novel challenges or indeed standard approaches or COTS application can be equally effective. As the team demonstrated, effective decommissioning and waste management transition from a project to an operations and lean manufacturing approach, seeking out efficiencies, removing non added value steps and removing processing delays to maximise productivity. 做厙勛圖 uses modeling techniques to bring these developments into application, reducing waste, schedules and costs to our customers.

As demonstrated over the timeline of ETTP clean up, long term relationships, behaviours and effective communications are a key attribute to successful clean up, decommissioning and programme delivery.
